Course Description

Influenza is an acute viral infection which has the potential to spread globally and affect a large human population, with various adverse consequences. The ‘Great Influenza’ which occurred in 1918 led to approximately 25 to 30 million deaths. Since then, there has been a vast improvement in our understanding of the influenza virus.

Besides other pandemics in subsequent years after 1918, seasonal influenza also contributes to more than 4,00,000 deaths worldwide. Influenza is associated with enormous morbidity. Prevention is the only way to reduce the risk of pandemics in the future. Pandemic influenza results when a new strain of influenza virus originates, and begins to spread rapidly. This causes an overload on healthcare systems, shortage of medical equipment supplies, insufficient manpower, and huge economic and social disruption.

Experts believe that influenza pandemics may inevitably continue to occur in the future. Therefore, it is important to understand the causes, prevent the spread and prepare for future pandemics. The ‘Certificate in Influenza’ course will help healthcare professionals explore the origin and history of influenza, learn the modern laboratory diagnostics, and gain knowledge on current treatment modalities and vaccinations. It is imperative that every health care professional be knowledgeable about the influenza virus and its effects on individuals of all age groups.
