Course Description

India is witnessing a demographic transition and the elderly population is growing at a faster rate than the general population. There is a decline in fertility and mortality rates, along with increased life expectancy leading to a progressive increase in the number of elderly persons. Life expectancy has steadily increased in India from 32-years at the time of independence to 68.8 years in 2018. According to the Indian census of 2011, there were approximately 104-million elderly persons (aged 60-years or above) making up 8% of the total population. The United Nations Population Fund has projected that the elderly population in India will rise triple-fold to 324 million by 2050, with the proportion of elderly rising from the current 8% to 19%. India has therefore acquired the tag of “aging nation”. Among the elderly, the proportion of those above 80-years is rising at a fast pace and these very elderly people are usually weaker, more frail, insecure, dependent and suffer more often from age-related diseases. In India, the elderly people suffer from dual medical problems, i.e. both communicable as well as noncommunicable diseases. There is inadequate training in the present medical curriculum on management of multimorbidity and several other age-related problems in the elderly.

The “Masterclass in geriatric medicine” course has been designed to address the medical management of health issues facing the elderly. The course is in the blended-learning format with six-months of online learning and three and half months of contact program under specialists handling geriatric patients. Students will learn the principles of management of elderly people in various settings such as outpatient clinic, day care, in-patient, accident and emergency units and in certain specialist areas and rehabilitation. The course will equip the students to manage a wide-range of medical conditions in the elderly.
