Course Description

Globally, cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death. In the year 2018, globally, cancer was responsible for an estimated 9.6 million deaths. About 1 in 6 deaths occurred due to cancer. It is estimated that approximately 70% of all cancer deaths occur in low and middle-income countries.

Oncology is one of the many branches of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer. A clinical oncologist is the one, who is the main healthcare provider for individuals with cancer. The main role of a clinical oncologist is to diagnose and treat cancer in individuals using chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological, and targeted therapy. Apart from this, a clinical oncologist also provides supportive care, and in a few instances, may also help coordinate treatment given by other specialists.

Management of cancer involves a collaborative effort not only through discussions or advice from a clinical oncologist, but also from surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, and organ-specific oncologists. Doctors from all these branches collaborate to find the best possible treatment for individuals with cancer.

In the current scenario, cancer survival has improved mainly due to three components, which include, improved efforts to reduce exposure to risk factors, availability of improved screening methods that are used to detect several cancers, and several improvements in the treatment of cancers. Therefore, it is very important for an oncologist to be updated with the latest advances in the field of oncology.

All the learning materials and assessments will be online. On successful completion of Session 1, you will be awarded a Certificate in Clinical Oncology. This Course is certified by Medvarsity and Apollo Hospitals Educational & Research Foundation (AHERF).
