The Fellowship in Fetal Medicine is a highly structured 12-month program designed to train the next generation of leaders in advanced maternal-fetal care. Fellows gain comprehensive experience rotating through specialty units including anomaly scanning, invasive fetal therapy operating rooms, perinatal counseling clinics, obstetric anesthesiology, neonatal intensive care, and maternal medicine services.
A foundational element of the fellowship is its progressive graded supervision model. Fellows systematically advance through increasing levels of autonomy while completing a significant volume of clinical experience, including extensive diagnostic ultrasounds and invasive fetal procedures such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, percutaneous umbilical blood sampling, and intrauterine transfusions.
The progression phases include:
Aligned with ACCME-accredited CME/CPD standards, this fellowship guarantees educational independence, measurable outcomes, and competency-driven progression throughout clinical training. Continuous assessment mechanisms include meticulous maintenance of digital case logs with monthly faculty review, weekly imaging and case presentations, and biannual competency evaluations. Structured feedback is delivered via direct observation, image audits, and multidisciplinary team discussions. Professional growth is further supported through scholarly activities, including case reports, quality improvement projects, and comprehensive 360° evaluations from operating room teams.
Upon successful completion, graduates will be fully prepared to interpret complex fetal imaging, perform invasive procedures safely and compassionately counsel families, while leading collaborative perinatal care teams. Fellowship certification is granted upon successful completion of required procedural volumes, academic milestones, and competency assessments.
