Overview
The Surgical Training in Vitreoretinal Surgery is a highly structured, hospital-based program designed to train ophthalmologists in the clinical, surgical, and decision-making foundations of vitreoretinal surgery. The program is delivered in a high-volume surgical retina environment and emphasizes systematic exposure to a broad spectrum of vitreoretinal pathologies, operative workflows, and perioperative management strategies that are essential for advanced retinal practice.
A core strength of the course lies in its progressive, graded supervision framework, aligned with ICO–OSCAR–VIT competency standards. Learners advance through clearly defined stages of responsibility, beginning with operating room orientation, case observation, and assisted participation, followed by structured involvement in surgical steps based on demonstrated competence. Surgical exposure spans core vitrectomy principles, posterior vitreous detachment induction, membrane handling techniques, tamponade strategies, and complication recognition, with progression determined by faculty assessment rather than fixed timelines.
The course is academically anchored and aligned with the ACCME accredited educational principles, ensuring educational independence, structured outcomes, and competency-driven progression. Learning is reinforced through a combination of online surgical retina modules, case-based discussions, structured surgical documentation, and mandatory maintenance of detailed surgical logbooks. Ongoing evaluation includes faculty feedback at the end of each rotation, direct observation using standardized assessment tools, and reflective self-assessment mapped to international benchmarks.
Scholarly development and professional readiness are integral to the program. Learners are guided in clinical documentation, case presentation, and academic reporting, culminating in the submission or presentation of a research or case-based paper at the end of the masterclass. Upon successful completion of defined competency milestones, assessments, and program requirements, graduates are positioned to transition into confident vitreoretinal practice, equipped with the clinical judgment, procedural understanding, and leadership readiness required to establish or strengthen surgical retina services.
